Flood forecasts estimate future river conditions or inundation to support preparedness.

Coverage, lead time, and skill depend on the model, basin, and input data.
River forecasts can support preparedness, such as planning evacuation resources, but decisions also depend on official warnings and local conditions. Hydrologic models estimate runoff and streamflow; inundation models estimate where water may spread over terrain. Recurrent models such as LSTMs can represent temporal inputs, but their accuracy must be evaluated. Google’s November 2024 announcement describes a seven-day lead time, with reliability compared against a specified nowcast baseline. It reports 100 countries with verified data and up to 150 countries using data based on virtual gauges; this is a dated release statement, not a guarantee of verified predictions everywhere. Ungauged basins lack local streamflow observations needed for calibration and validation. NOAA’s National Water Model simulates observed and forecast streamflow and complements official NWS forecasts. Riverine forecasts do not necessarily resolve rapid flash flooding or urban drainage at the required local scale.
Use river forecasts alongside official warnings for preparedness.
Combine rainfall forecasts with hydrologic estimates.
Treat inundation maps as guidance with uncertainty.
Use local emergency-management channels.
Forecasts should support, not replace, official warnings and local emergency guidance. Communicate lead time and uncertainty, and distinguish riverine from flash-flood hazards.

Flood forecasts estimate future river conditions or inundation to support preparedness. Coverage, lead time, and skill depend on the model, basin, and input data.
The two stages answer different questions: river conditions and the areas potentially covered by water. Their outputs retain uncertainty.
NOAA describes the National Water Model as a hydrologic simulation that complements official forecast products; it is not a replacement for local warnings.
An LSTM can model temporal relationships in a sequence. Suitability and skill require evaluation on the target basins and forecast horizons.
The November 2024 announcement describes a seven-day forecast lead time, with reliability evaluated against a specified nowcast baseline. This is a reported model result, not a guarantee for every flood.
Google reported these two coverage groups for that release. They should not be merged into a claim of verified coverage at every location.
