The AI Assessment Scale for Classrooms

An AI video interview assessment is a one-way, recorded interview in which a candidate answers set questions on camera and software transcribes and scores the answers, usually on their language content, to rank applicants before a human looks at them.
It matters because these tools act as gatekeepers for large numbers of jobs. They have drawn serious criticism over bias and transparency and are now covered by specific laws in some places.
In an asynchronous, or one-way, video interview, no one is on the other end. The candidate sees a question, gets a short preparation time and records an answer, often with limited retakes. AI scoring then runs on the recording. Speech recognition converts it to text. Language models or classifiers analyze the content for signs linked to job competencies, such as describing a specific situation and its result. Some systems also use vocal features such as pace or pauses. Models trained on human ratings or on answers from high performers produce scores, and recruiters focus on the top-ranked candidates. Early systems also analyzed facial expressions, and that became the biggest controversy. In 2019 the Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission about HireVue, and in early 2021 HireVue said it had stopped using facial analysis. Also in 2021, an investigation by the German broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk reported that one video-assessment tool changed personality scores when the same person wore glasses or a headscarf or sat in front of a bookshelf. Speech recognition raises its own concerns. A 2020 study found that major commercial systems made substantially more errors transcribing Black speakers than white speakers, and errors in the transcript carry through into content scores. The law is catching up. Illinois' Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act, in force since 2020, requires notice, an explanation and consent. Maryland requires consent before facial recognition is used in interviews. New York City's Local Law 144 requires bias audits and notices for automated employment decision tools. The EU AI Act classes AI used in recruitment as high-risk. This is different from resume screening, which scores documents. Video assessment scores a performance. For candidates, the practical advice follows from how the systems work: answer the actual question with a clear structure, make sure the audio is clean, and ask for accommodations if you need them.
The trend has moved away from facial and emotion analysis toward scoring only transcribed content, partly because of regulatory and reputational pressure. Expect more bias audits, more notice requirements and closer scrutiny under the EU AI Act's high-risk rules. There is an open question about whether generative AI will weaken these tools, since candidates can now rehearse with, or read from, AI-written answers. Employers may respond by adding live interviews back in, or by designing questions that are harder to prepare for generically.
A retail chain hiring seasonal staff sends every applicant a link to record answers to five questions, with 30 seconds to think and two minutes to answer each. The software scores the transcripts against competencies such as customer focus.
A graduate applying to a bank records a one-way interview, and the bank's recruiters review only the candidates the system ranks in the top band.
An applicant in Illinois is told before the interview that AI will analyze her video, is given an explanation of how it works and is asked for consent, as the state's Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act requires.
A candidate who stutters asks the employer for an accommodation, such as a live interview or extra time, because speech-based scoring may misjudge how he speaks rather than what he says.

The candidate sees prompts and records answers on their own, and software or recruiters review the recordings later.
After criticism that included a 2019 EPIC complaint to the FTC, HireVue said it had stopped using facial analysis in its assessments.
The investigation found personality scores shifted with visual details unrelated to the job, which raised validity and bias concerns.
Most scoring runs on the transcript, so higher error rates for some speakers, such as those found for Black speakers in a 2020 study, can unfairly lower their scores.
Since 2020 Illinois has required employers to notify candidates, explain how the AI works and get consent before AI analyzes interview videos.
