Bagging fits models to bootstrap samples and aggregates them; gradient boosting adds weak learners sequentially to reduce a loss. These methods are often strong options for structured data, but performance depends on the dataset and evaluation.
Bagging trains estimators on resampled data and aggregates their outputs, often reducing variance. Gradient boosting builds estimators sequentially; each step fits a function related to the negative gradient of the current loss. The learning rate shrinks each tree’s contribution, while limits on depth, row sampling, feature sampling, and other regularization control complexity. Implementations such as scikit-learn gradient boosting, XGBoost, LightGBM, and CatBoost differ in objective support, categorical handling, and systems design. Tree ensembles are frequently competitive on tabular problems, but no model family wins universally.
Use a random forest as a bagging baseline for structured classification data.
Use gradient boosting to model nonlinear relationships among tabular features.
Tune tree depth, row/feature subsampling, and learning rate on validation data.
Compare an ensemble against simpler and neural baselines with a held-out test set.
Tree ensembles continue to receive engineering improvements in efficiency, categorical-feature support, and accelerator use. The appropriate choice depends on data size, feature types, latency, interpretability needs, and validation results; use measured performance rather than assuming a family is best.

Ensemble methods combine multiple predictive models. Bagging fits models to bootstrap samples and aggregates them; gradient boosting adds weak learners sequentially to reduce a loss. These methods are often strong options for structured data, but performance depends on the dataset and evaluation.
An ensemble combines model outputs; whether this improves accuracy or robustness depends on the members, data, and aggregation method.
Boosting updates the model in sequence, while bagging fits estimators to bootstrap samples independently, which permits parallel fitting.
For a chosen loss, boosting fits an approximate negative-gradient target, commonly called a pseudo-residual; it is not always a literal prediction residual.
Shrinkage scales each tree’s contribution. A smaller rate can improve generalization in some settings, but may require additional trees and does not guarantee better results.
The cited tree-boosting systems are evaluated on structured/tabular data; this does not mean they dominate every dataset or benchmark.
