A chatbot’s “kid-safe” label is a product claim, not a guarantee that every response is accurate, age-appropriate, private, or emotionally healthy.
Families and schools should evaluate the intended age range, data practices, safeguards, adult oversight, and ways to report or correct a problem.
A chatbot designed for children may use simpler language, topic filters, parent settings, or guided activities. Those features can be useful, but families should ask what the service actually does, what ages it supports, and what happens when a child asks about a sensitive topic. No filter catches every unsafe or misleading answer, and a child-friendly tone can make incorrect advice sound trustworthy. Review data collection before creating an account. Ask whether prompts, uploaded work, voice, age, or location are stored; how long they are retained; whether they may be used to improve or personalize the service; and who can see them. For U.S. services covered by COPPA, the FTC’s rule addresses online collection of personal information from children under 13, including notice and verifiable parental-consent requirements with defined exceptions. Coverage depends on the service and facts; other jurisdictions have different rules. Schools should also use their own approved-tool and student-privacy process. Look for controls that match the household or classroom need: age settings, time limits, data deletion, parental supervision, content reporting, and human escalation. Test realistic prompts with an adult and review responses; do not ask a child to probe dangerous content alone. Explain that an AI chatbot is a tool rather than a person or therapist. Preserve an offline option and tell children whom to contact when a conversation is confusing, upsetting, or urgent. Recheck the terms and controls when the product changes.
Child-focused chatbots will add more voice, personalization, and learning features. Those capabilities can also increase the amount of personal context a service receives and the chance that a child treats it as a trusted companion. Product labels may change faster than independent evidence. Families should review updates, ask whether a child’s data can be deleted, and keep human support accessible to the child. Schools can pilot tools with educators and privacy staff before students use them broadly and checking controls.
Check whether a service is designed for the child’s age and reading level.
Test how it responds to a request for dangerous instructions before classroom use.
Review deletion, parent-control, and escalation settings with the child.
Ask the school who approves a chatbot and what student data it may receive.
