AI can help you work out whether a delayed or cancelled flight qualifies for compensation under rules such as the EU's Regulation 261/2004 or the UK's version, UK261.
It can also help you draft a claim to send directly to the airline. This matters because claim companies keep a sizable share of any payout, while a well-documented claim you file yourself costs nothing.
EU Regulation 261/2004 covers flights leaving an EU airport on any airline. It also covers flights arriving in the EU from outside, if an EU airline operates them. The United Kingdom kept a matching set of rules after Brexit, known as UK261, with amounts in pounds. Compensation is a fixed sum based on flight distance. It is 250 euros for flights up to 1,500 km. It is 400 euros for flights within the EU over 1,500 km and for other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km. It is 600 euros for longer flights. The regulation's text covers cancellations and denied boarding. The Court of Justice of the EU later ruled that passengers who arrive three hours or more late are owed comparable compensation. In the longest band, the airline may halve the payment if the arrival delay is between three and four hours. The main exemption is 'extraordinary circumstances', meaning events outside the airline's control, such as severe weather or air traffic control restrictions. Routine technical faults are generally not treated as extraordinary. Airlines sometimes use the exemption loosely, so asking for details is reasonable. The United States works differently. No federal law requires cash compensation for delays. Department of Transportation rules require refunds when a flight is cancelled or significantly changed and the passenger turns down the alternative. DOT also publishes a dashboard showing what each large airline has promised to provide, such as meals or hotel rooms. AI tools help with three jobs. They can check which set of rules applies, work out the distance band, and draft a factual claim. The claim should include the booking reference, flight number, scheduled and actual arrival times, and a clear request for payment. Many people assume they need a claim company. These companies mostly file the same form you can file yourself, and they keep a sizable percentage of the payout as their fee. If the airline refuses, national enforcement bodies and alternative dispute resolution schemes are free next steps.

Passenger rights rules are reviewed from time to time. The EU has discussed revising Regulation 261/2004 for years, including the delay thresholds that trigger compensation, and any change would have to pass as formal legislation. In the United States, refund rules have become more specific, while cash compensation for delays is still up to each airline's policy. Airlines increasingly offer automated claim forms and apps that fill in details for you, and AI assistants can help passengers understand eligibility quickly. Before filing, check the current text of the rules and official guidance instead of assuming the thresholds have stayed the same.
A passenger arrives in Madrid 3 hours 40 minutes late on a direct flight from Paris, a distance under 1,500 km. They ask an AI to check EU261, which identifies the 250 euro band, and they draft a claim with the flight number and scheduled and actual arrival times.
A traveler whose US domestic flight was delayed five hours asks an AI whether compensation is owed. It explains that US rules focus on refunds rather than fixed payouts, and points them to the airline's published customer service commitments, such as meal vouchers.
After an airline rejects a claim citing 'extraordinary circumstances', a passenger asks an AI to draft a polite reply asking for specific evidence of the event and how it caused this particular delay.
A family on a single booking from Lisbon to New York via Madrid arrives five hours late. They ask an AI to confirm that the delay is measured at the final destination and that the distance band uses the direct Lisbon to New York distance.
