SIFT is a four-move method for evaluating online information: Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, and Trace claims, quotes and media to the original context.
It helps readers choose efficient checks and avoid spending time deeply reading a source before understanding who made it and what others have found.
SIFT, developed by information-literacy educator Mike Caulfield, names four moves: Stop; Investigate the source; Find better coverage; and Trace claims, quotes and media to the original context. It is a flexible method, not a rigid checklist that must always be completed in order. Depending on the question, one move may be enough; a consequential or complex claim may call for all four. Stop before reacting or sharing. Notice whether the claim is unfamiliar, emotionally charged or outside your expertise. Investigate the source: who made it, what experience they have with this topic, and what interests or corrections are visible elsewhere? Do not rely only on the site’s self-description. Find better coverage by searching for reporting or analysis from sources with relevant expertise. Look for independent work rather than repeated copies of a single claim. Trace the claim, quote or media to its original context. Open the cited study, interview, public record, original video or earliest available image publication. Check whether the first source says what later posts claim it says. An article may summarize a study accurately, overstate it or omit a limitation; a viral picture may be genuine but old or attached to a false location. Keep notes on which move changed your understanding. SIFT does not guarantee a true/false answer, and “better coverage” still needs evaluation. If original sources are unavailable or independent evidence conflicts, describe what remains uncertain. The method supports informed judgment and careful sharing; it does not replace subject expertise, technical investigation or a fair account of evidence.
SIFT remains useful as online claims increasingly arrive through AI summaries, social feeds and short-form video. Readers can investigate the source behind a generated answer, search for independent coverage and trace statements to original records. The tools used for these moves will evolve, so the method should be practiced with current interfaces and real examples. It works best as a habit of pausing, widening context and matching confidence to the evidence rather than as a promise that every claim can be solved quickly.
A reader pauses before sharing an alarming post, checks who published it, looks for trusted reporting and traces the quote to its source.
A student investigates an unfamiliar organization before reading a long article from it.
A fact-checker searches for better coverage of a viral statistic, then opens the original study and checks what it measured.
A viewer traces a reused photo to its earliest available publication and compares the original caption with the viral claim.

SIFT is a four-move method for evaluating online information: Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, and Trace claims, quotes and media to the original context. It helps readers choose efficient checks and avoid spending time deeply reading a source before understanding who made it and what others have found.
Investigate the source asks who made the claim and what expertise or interests they have.
Finding better coverage seeks trusted and independent reporting or analysis.
Tracing the image can reveal earlier context and a misleading later caption.
SIFT is flexible and may use one or more moves depending on the claim.
A failed search does not prove nonexistence, but the claim remains unverified.
