Diepe duik
Every modern digital hearing aid is a tiny computer. It picks up sound through microphones, splits it into frequency bands, amplifies each band to match the wearer's hearing loss, and plays it through a receiver in the ear canal. The hardest problem has always been noise. People with hearing loss usually struggle most in restaurants, parties and busy streets, and turning up the volume amplifies the clatter along with the voices. Traditional hearing aids tackled this with directional microphones, which favour sound from in front of the wearer, and rule-based noise reduction that turns down bands dominated by steady noise such as fans or engines. These help, but they struggle with babble, where the noise is other people talking and looks a lot like the speech you want. AI-based hearing aids add deep neural networks trained on large collections of recorded sound scenes. Oticon's More, launched in 2021, used a network trained on millions of sound scenes to balance speech and background. In 2024 Phonak's Audéo Sphere Infinio added a dedicated chip to run a denoising network that separates speech from noise in real time. Starkey has marketed on-device AI for sound classification and fall detection. Many devices also use classifiers that recognise the environment and change settings automatically. In the US, over-the-counter hearing aids became available after an FDA rule took effect in October 2022, for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. In 2024 the FDA also authorised a hearing aid feature for Apple's AirPods Pro 2. These can help many people, but they are not meant for severe or profound loss, children, sudden hearing loss, or ear pain and drainage, which need a clinician. A common misconception is that AI restores hearing. It cannot repair damaged hair cells in the inner ear. It processes sound more cleverly, and results still depend heavily on proper fitting.

The Future of AI in Hearing Aids
Dedicated neural chips are becoming standard in premium hearing aids, and this capability is likely to move into mid-priced and over-the-counter devices as chips get cheaper and more efficient. Research is exploring systems that focus on a chosen speaker, for example the person the wearer is looking at, though reliable real-world versions are still developing. Independent, peer-reviewed comparisons of AI features in everyday conditions remain limited, so manufacturer claims should be read carefully. Wider access through earbuds may reduce stigma and cost, but professional fitting and diagnosis will remain important for moderate-to-severe loss and for medical causes of hearing problems.
Implementatie in de echte wereld
In a busy restaurant, a hearing aid's denoising network lowers the clatter of dishes and nearby chatter while keeping the voice of the person across the table clear.
A sound-scene classifier notices the wearer has moved from a quiet office to a windy street and switches to wind-noise reduction and stronger directional focus without a button press.
An adult with mild hearing loss buys over-the-counter hearing aids and adjusts them through a smartphone app hearing test instead of visiting an audiologist.
An adult with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss uses the FDA-authorised hearing aid feature on AirPods Pro 2, while a child with severe loss is referred to a clinician for prescription devices or a cochlear implant evaluation.

Veelgestelde vragen
What is AI in Hearing Aids?
AI hearing aids use small neural networks running on the device to separate speech from background noise in real time and to recognise listening environments, so conversations in restaurants and crowds become easier to follow. This matters because noisy places are where people with hearing loss struggle most, and simple amplification makes noise louder along with voices. AI improves sound processing but cannot repair damaged hearing.
Why is simply turning up the volume a poor solution in noisy places?
Plain amplification raises everything, so the clatter and chatter get louder too and speech is not easier to pick out.
What does a typical hearing aid denoising network output?
The network estimates how much to keep or reduce each band in each short frame, which is cheaper than generating audio from scratch.
Roughly what processing delay do hearing aids need to stay within?
Longer delays cause echo or colouring because the wearer also hears the direct sound, so processing must be very fast.
Which type of background noise do traditional rule-based systems struggle with most?
Babble looks similar to the speech the wearer wants, so simple rules that target steady noise cannot separate it well.
In the US, who are over-the-counter hearing aids intended for?
The FDA rule that took effect in October 2022 covers adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.
