Being accused of using AI when you did not is stressful, but most academic integrity processes are designed to hear your side, and the strongest defense is usually the ordinary evidence of how you worked. Start by staying calm and asking questions. What specifically raised the concern: a detector score, a change in style, or something in the content? Ask for the relevant policy and the steps that will follow. Reply in writing so there is a record, and keep it polite. Then gather your evidence. Version history in Google Docs or Word shows your document growing over time. Keep outlines, handwritten notes, earlier drafts, photos of brainstorming, browser history showing research, library loans, and messages with classmates or tutors about the assignment. If you used tools such as a grammar checker or translation app, say so plainly and explain how; hiding permitted help makes it look like something worse. Show that you know the material. Offer to explain your argument, discuss your sources, or write a short piece on the topic under supervision. Someone who wrote an essay can usually explain why they chose a source or structured a section a certain way. Know the weaknesses of detectors. They estimate probability and can be wrong; a 2023 Stanford study found common detectors frequently misclassified essays by non-native English writers as AI-generated. Some vendors, including Turnitin, have said their AI score should not be the sole basis for action against a student. If a decision goes against you, most institutions have an appeal process with a deadline, often a short one. Appeals usually need a written statement and evidence, and many allow an advisor, ombudsperson or student advocate to support you. In the United States, FERPA gives eligible students, or parents of younger students, the right to inspect education records, which can include evidence used in the case.
