State-space models represent sequence processing through a latent state updated over time.

Mamba adds input-dependent selectivity and a hardware-aware scan to make sequence modeling efficient.
A time-invariant linear state-space recurrence can be unrolled as a long convolution, enabling parallel training. Mamba makes selected parameters depend on the current input; this selectivity breaks the fixed convolution kernel, so the paper uses a hardware-aware parallel scan to compute the recurrence efficiently. The Mamba paper describes linear-time sequence processing and a recurrent state at inference. The convolution equivalence belongs to fixed-parameter SSMs, not selective Mamba itself. In the Mamba paper’s autoregressive language-model experiments, the standard training corpus was The Pile. The Mamba block combines the selective-SSM output and a projected branch with an elementwise gated interaction. The reported Mamba-3B model matched Transformers twice its size on the paper’s pretraining and downstream evaluations; scope this result to those experiments.

The Mamba paper says its standard autoregressive language-modeling experiments use The Pile; this identifies the paper’s dataset, not a universal training corpus.
The Mamba architecture combines its selective SSM with an MLP-style branch in a single block; the paper describes the block computation as using a multiplicative/gated interaction.
