Founder & Research Program Lead

Alex Gonzalez

Alex Gonzalez is the founder of AI Understanding, an independent U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 41-3273048) that publishes free, plain-language AI education, news, and open research data.

As Research Program Lead, he serves as the principal-investigator equivalent for the AI Understanding Research Group: accountable for its research agenda, project selection, methods, publication standards, open-data commitments, and corrections. The program studies how artificial-intelligence information is produced, sourced, organized, and understood. Its public outputs include the AI News Observatory — continuously updated statistics with a published, versioned methodology and record-level datasets released under CC BY 4.0 — the AI Security & Integrity Lab's authorized defensive research program, and an open framework mapping 30 AI-literacy competencies to courses and applied capstones.

This is an organizational research role at an independent nonprofit, not a university faculty appointment. Research inquiries: [email protected].
