AI Understanding is a nonprofit organization committed to open access education. We collect the minimum information required to operate responsibly, improve reliability, and communicate with people who choose to hear from us.
What we collect

How we use information

AI tutor data
When you use the AI tutor, the messages needed to answer your question are sent to the live AI provider configured for the service. AI Understanding does not write raw tutor conversations to its learner database. For signed-in learners, quizzes can create an aggregate skill record containing a score, attempt count, and review date so we can recommend practice; it does not contain the question or answer text. Your saved tutor conversation is kept in your browser's local storage until you clear it or remove the site's stored data.
Please do not share passwords, financial information, medical details, confidential school records, or other sensitive personal information with the tutor. Organizations deploying the tutor for students should contact us before use so appropriate contracts, access controls, retention rules, and educational privacy requirements can be reviewed.
What we do not do
- We do not sell personal information.
- We do not run third-party ad tracking marketplaces.
- We do not use personal data for unrelated commercial profiling.
Third-party services
We use trusted service providers for email delivery, authentication, and donation processing. These providers are expected to follow strong security and privacy standards.
Cookies
- Essential cookies are used for secure account/session functions and core site reliability.
- Session cookies are used to keep you signed in to your account.
- Theme, translation preference, popup dismissal, and client-side analytics session state are stored in browser storage rather than request cookies.

Data retention
We retain data only as long as necessary for operational, legal, and nonprofit reporting obligations. You may request deletion of data where applicable by contacting our team.
