The original paper optimizes objectives at nested dimensions; shorter prefixes can reduce the number of stored coordinates when an application chooses that trade-off.
Kusupati et al. introduce MRL, which applies a combined training objective at multiple nested dimensions so a prefix of the representation remains useful. The paper evaluates this approach on specified tasks and models. At inference, a system may retain a prefix and normalize it; the quality trade-off depends on the trained model, chosen prefix, and evaluation. OpenAI’s embeddings documentation separately describes a dimensions parameter for text-embedding-3 models. This API fact does not establish that OpenAI popularized MRL or that every embedding model supports truncation. The paper illustrates nested prefix sizes including 8, 16, and 32 dimensions, with larger prefixes up to the embedding size; this schedule is a paper example, not a universal required configuration.
Paper concept: train one representation with losses at several nested prefix lengths.
Inference operation: retain a chosen leading prefix and normalize it for a similarity comparison.
API example: OpenAI’s text-embedding-3 documentation exposes a dimensions parameter for shortening output vectors.
Illustrative: compare retrieval quality and vector storage at several dimensions before selecting a prefix; fewer coordinates may reduce storage, but must be benchmarked.
Test the chosen dimension against the application’s recall, latency, and storage requirements. Do not assume an adoption trend, deployment scale, or cost reduction without measurements for the specific index and model.

MRL trains representations at nested dimensions so prefixes can serve at several lengths. Prefix quality is an objective of training and must be evaluated for the chosen model and task.
OpenAI’s embeddings guide documents the dimensions parameter for text-embedding-3 models. That API documentation supports this scoped capability, not a claim that OpenAI popularized MRL.
Using fewer coordinates may reduce vector storage and similarity-comparison work, but retrieval quality and end-to-end cost depend on the model and index.
