This provides a shared input alphabet across writing systems, while increasing sequence length for a standard transformer. The Byte Latent Transformer (BLT) addresses that cost by grouping bytes into variable-size patches based on next-byte entropy; language knowledge still depends on training data.
A byte-level model takes UTF-8 byte values as input rather than splitting text into a fixed subword vocabulary. ByT5 showed that a standard Transformer can operate on byte sequences, while also documenting the longer-sequence tradeoff. The Byte Latent Transformer (BLT) groups bytes into dynamically sized patches using estimates of next-byte entropy. Its main global Transformer processes patch representations, with local byte-level encoder and decoder components. The BLT paper reports compute-controlled scaling experiments up to 8B parameters and 4T training bytes; its performance and efficiency comparisons are limited to the evaluated models and tasks.
Processing unusual spellings or noisy text without a tokenizer mapping rare sequences to unknown tokens
Comparing how multilingual strings are segmented by subword tokens versus raw bytes
Using entropy-based patches to allocate more model computation to less predictable text
Studying byte-level model behavior on text where character boundaries or scripts vary
Tokenizer-free models are being studied for multilingual text, noisy inputs, and settings where vocabulary design creates uneven sequence lengths. Dynamic patching is one way to manage byte-sequence compute. Future comparisons need matched compute budgets, languages, and training data rather than assuming a single byte-level design is universally faster or more capable.

Token fertility depends on the tokenizer vocabulary and its training data; languages less represented in that data can be split into more pieces.
Bytes provide a shared encoding alphabet for text, but a model’s ability to process a language still depends on what it learned during training.
