Models assist with classification and triage, while astronomers and follow-up observations are needed to validate scientific interpretations.
Wide-field surveys repeatedly image the sky and identify changes by comparing new exposures with reference data. Rubin’s public technology page presents roughly 10 terabytes of nightly data and up to seven million alerts as design capacities. At the June 30, 2026 start of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, Rubin separately reported collecting about 10 terabytes and producing as many as seven million alerts per night during early operations. These are launch-period operational figures, not a guarantee that every observing night has identical conditions or totals. Alert brokers ingest packets, add contextual information, and help researchers prioritize follow-up. Machine-learning classifiers can assist this workflow, but an alert or model score remains a candidate for analysis, not a confirmed discovery.
Classifying candidate transients from survey alerts so astronomers can prioritize follow-up
Separating likely real detections from image artifacts for review
Finding rare galaxy and gravitational-lens candidates in survey imagery
Estimating photometric redshifts from broadband measurements as a complement to spectroscopy
Rubin Observatory has begun its ten-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time. Its June 2026 launch announcement reported about 10 terabytes of data and up to seven million alerts per night during early operations; the separate technology page describes those figures as design capacities. Nightly output can vary with observing conditions and downtime, so use nightly summaries or the live status page for specific dates. AI may help researchers prioritize observations, while follow-up measurements remain central to confirming unusual objects.

De vrais faux classificateurs, généralement des CNN, évaluent les détections pour séparer les véritables sources changeantes des artefacts instrumentaux et de traitement.
Rubin’s June 30, 2026 LSST start announcement reported approximately 10 terabytes collected each night during early operations. Actual nightly totals can vary.
Rubin explains that it automatically compares new images with older ones to identify changes in position or brightness.
A photometric redshift estimates a galaxy’s redshift from broadband colors; that redshift can then be used to estimate cosmological distance. Redshift is not itself a direct measurement of recession velocity.
Les véritables événements transitoires sont beaucoup moins courants que les artefacts, c'est pourquoi les équipes utilisent des injections d'augmentation et de simulation pour équilibrer l'entraînement.
