The paper reports quality comparable to NeRF with much shorter optimization on its evaluated benchmarks; speed and quality depend on scene and implementation.
Plenoxels (Fridovich-Keil, Yu and colleagues, 2022) represents a scene with a sparse 3D grid, storing opacity and spherical-harmonic coefficients for view-dependent color in occupied voxels. It optimizes these parameters directly with gradient-based methods and regularization, without an MLP. Rendering uses trilinear interpolation along rays and standard volume rendering. On the paper’s benchmark settings, Plenoxels achieved quality comparable to NeRF while reducing optimization time by about two orders of magnitude; the authors report roughly 11 minutes for typical bounded scenes on a single Titan RTX, versus about a day for NeRF. These times are specific to their implementation and setup.
Comparing explicit voxel-grid optimization with neural radiance fields on a bounded scene
Inspecting the opacity and view-dependent color coefficients used by a radiance-field representation
Testing sparse storage when most of a scene’s voxel volume is empty
Using total-variation regularization to encourage spatially smoother voxel coefficients
Explicit radiance representations continue to be compared with neural fields and point-based methods. Their tradeoffs include memory use, scene bounds, optimization speed, and ease of editing. Plenoxels remains a useful result demonstrating that direct optimization of explicit scene parameters can work well under particular benchmark conditions.

Plenoxels (plenoptic voxels) is an explicit radiance-field representation that stores scene values in a sparse voxel grid and optimizes them without a neural network. The paper reports quality comparable to NeRF with much shorter optimization on its evaluated benchmarks; speed and quality depend on scene and implementation.
The paper reports roughly 100× faster optimization on its benchmark setup, including about 11 minutes for typical bounded scenes on one Titan RTX; this is not a guarantee for every scene or implementation.
Plenoxels utilise une interpolation trilinéaire différentiable pour lire en douceur la couleur et l'opacité entre les centres des voxels.
The authors show a network-free voxel representation reaching comparable quality on their evaluated benchmark tasks; the result does not establish that networks are irrelevant in general.
