AI Glossary Term
What does “Generative AI” mean?
AI systems that produce new content such as text, images, audio, video, or code.
How Generative AI works
Example
You type 'write a friendly reminder email about Friday's meeting', and a model drafts one. Another tool turns the sentence 'a lighthouse at dawn' into a picture. Neither output is copied from a single source, but both reflect patterns in training data.
Why it matters
Generative AI lowers the effort to create drafts, images, and code, and also makes convincing fakes and errors easier to produce. Checking outputs remains the user's job.
Common questions
How is generative AI different from other AI?
Many AI systems classify or predict. Generative systems create new content in the form of text, images, audio, video, or code.
Is the content original?
It is newly generated, but shaped by training data, so it can echo existing material and reflect its biases.
Can it be wrong?
Yes. Fluent output is not proof of accuracy, so important facts should be verified.
