概要
Submitting AI-written text as your own counts as fraud under the Common App's rules and is prohibited at many colleges. This matters because the essay is often the only place admissions readers hear your own voice, so both the rules and the risks come down to who actually wrote it.
ディープダイブ
The Common App, which many U.S. colleges use, updated its fraud policy in 2023. Submitting substantive content from an artificial intelligence platform as your own work now counts as fraud. Individual colleges set their own rules on top of that, and they vary. Some, such as Caltech, have published examples of acceptable uses, like checking grammar, next to unacceptable ones, like having a tool write the draft. Others describe AI as allowed in roughly the way feedback from a teacher or counselor is allowed, as long as the ideas and the writing are yours. Because policies differ, the safest approach is to read each college's admissions website and any statement you are asked to sign. The uses most often described as acceptable fall at the start and end of the process. At the start, AI can help you brainstorm by asking you questions about your experiences. At the end, it can act as a proofreader. The unacceptable middle is generating paragraphs, rewriting your draft into a 'better' version, or supplying the anecdotes and reflections that the essay is supposed to show. There is also a practical reason to keep AI away from your sentences. Admissions readers see thousands of essays, and AI prose tends to sound alike: polished, general and full of familiar phrases. The details that make an essay memorable, like a specific smell, an exact thing someone said or an odd habit, are ones only you know. A common misconception is that colleges catch AI mainly with detection software. Detectors are unreliable. OpenAI withdrew its own AI text classifier in 2023 because it wasn't accurate enough, and a 2023 Stanford study found detectors often mislabeled essays by non-native English writers as AI-generated. The real risk is less about getting caught and more about handing in an essay that doesn't sound like you.

The Future of Using AI on College Application Essays
Admissions policies on AI are still changing, and they are likely to keep varying from college to college for some time. More applications may ask you directly whether and how you used AI, or ask you to certify that the essay is your own work. Some colleges may lean more on other signs of writing ability, such as interviews, graded school work or timed writing. Detection software is unlikely to become reliable enough to decide cases alone, so policies will probably keep depending on honesty and attestation. Whatever changes, the underlying goal of the essay stays the same: helping a reader understand who you are in your own words.
現実世界の実装
An applicant who can't settle on a topic asks a chatbot to interview her with ten questions about moments she changed her mind. She tells it not to suggest any wording. Her answer about quitting the debate team becomes her essay topic.
A student pastes his finished draft and asks the AI to point out any sentence where a reader might get confused, without rewriting anything. He then fixes the two flagged paragraphs in his own words.
An applicant runs a spell and grammar check and accepts only the individual fixes for typos and punctuation. She turns down suggestions that would reword whole sentences into a more polished but generic style.
A student asks a chatbot to 'make this sound more impressive'. The result is full of stock phrases, and he realizes it no longer sounds like him, so he goes back to his earlier version.

How does the Common App's updated fraud policy treat AI content?
The Common App updated its fraud policy in 2023 so that submitting substantive content from an AI platform as your own work counts as fraud.
Which use of AI is most often described as acceptable?
Brainstorming by answering the AI's questions keeps the ideas and wording yours. The other options hand over the writing or the content.
Why does the guide recommend checking each college's own website?
Colleges set their own rules on top of the Common App policy. Some publish examples, and some ask you to sign statements.
According to the guide, why do AI-written essays tend to sound generic?
Picking likely wording pulls the text toward familiar phrasing. Memorable essays depend on unusual specifics only the applicant knows.
In Using AI on College Application Essays: what happened to OpenAI's AI text classifier in 2023?
OpenAI withdrew the classifier because of its low accuracy. This is one reason detectors shouldn't be treated as reliable.
