Key terms

Foundation Model
A large pre-trained model that can be adapted to many downstream tasks.
Benchmark
A standardized test or dataset used to measure and compare model performance.

What happened

Haut.AI has launched its Skin (SkinFM), a new image-based AI foundation model trained on more than 4 million real skin images. The company has also released SkinBench, a new public that shows six leading AI models frequently identify skin concerns that aren't actually present or fail to detect concerns that are.

Haut.AI's SkinFM uses a single, image-based AI foundation to analyze multiple skin characteristics, enabling the company to develop new skin measurements faster and create customized grading systems tailored to individual brands' needs.

The SkinBench evaluates the models across 19 tests covering seven common skin concerns and characteristics, including wrinkles, sun spots, redness, skin tone, skin type, dark circles, and eye puffiness.

The results of SkinBench show that five leading AI models incorrectly identified eye puffiness in approximately 95% to 100% of images where it wasn't present, and struggled to find wrinkles and identify skin types.

Why it matters

The results of SkinBench raise concerns about the accuracy of AI-powered skincare advice and product recommendations. Haut.AI's technology scored 69.6 out of 100 on the SkinBench Skin Intelligence Score, compared to 50.6 for the highest-scoring general-purpose AI model.

The accuracy of AI-powered skincare advice and product recommendations is a concern, as consumers increasingly rely on AI for skincare advice.

False skin detections can lead to inappropriate product recommendations, unnecessary purchases, and a loss of consumer trust.

Haut.AI's technology can assess more than 230 skin measurements and 48 biomarkers, including wrinkles, redness, pigmentation, and other visible skin characteristics.
