Sound Recognition on iPhone and Sound Notifications on Android listen for selected environmental sounds and send a visual or haptic alert when a sound is detected.
They can help users notice alarms, doorbells, or other cues, but detection depends on microphone placement, supported sounds, and background noise. Apple warns not to rely on Sound Recognition for emergencies or navigation; it should supplement, not replace, safety systems.
Sound Recognition can convert selected environmental audio into phone notifications. Apple’s iPhone guide says the phone can continuously listen for selected sounds such as a doorbell, siren, or crying baby, and lets a user add a custom alarm or appliance sound. Apple cautions that the feature should not be relied on in high-risk or emergency situations, when a person may be harmed, or for navigation. Android Sound Notifications can monitor selected sounds such as smoke and fire alarms, sirens, baby sounds, doorbells, and appliance beeps; Google says audio stays on device and is not sent to Google without permission. Android can alert with vibration or camera flash, depending on settings and device. These are accessibility supports, not certified replacements for smoke alarms, baby monitors, emergency alert systems, or a person’s established safety routine. Detection can be affected by room acoustics, phone placement, distance, competing sound, microphone obstruction, and which sound types are enabled. A phone under a pillow or in another room may miss a cue. Custom sound recognition also requires the user to record examples in a quiet environment, and different alarms may sound unlike the sample. Users should try a feature in a controlled setting, check which sounds are enabled, place the phone where its microphone can hear, and understand notification behavior in silent or Do Not Disturb modes. Apple and Google support pages may change with software versions. For safety-critical situations, retain certified devices and redundant alerts, and follow manufacturer and local emergency guidance. A phone alert can add awareness, but it cannot guarantee detection or response.

Les équipes médias peuvent produire un son de qualité plus rapidement avec des budgets plus réduits.
Les systèmes orientés client peuvent traiter les interactions orales à plus grande échelle.
Phone sound alerts may recognize more cues and integrate with wearables, but they remain dependent on microphone access, supported sound models, and setup. Users should check alerts after OS updates and keep a separate safety plan for alarms or navigation. Manufacturers should state limits and provide controls for pausing listening. Additional alerts are useful only when people can notice and act on them. Designers should make listening state easy to find and offer a quick pause control for privacy and quiet settings.
An iPhone user enables smoke-alarm recognition and tests alert settings while keeping a separate household smoke alarm.
An Android user chooses doorbell and siren sounds and places the phone in an unobstructed location where it can hear them.
A user checks Sound Notifications history after an alert and provides feedback when a sound was mislabeled.
A family develops a backup plan for important alerts instead of assuming a phone will always hear them.
