Aperçu

Demand is shifting toward paralegals who can oversee AI tools, verify their output, manage case data and handle the judgment-heavy work software does poorly.

Plongée profonde

Paralegal work is a bundle of tasks, and AI affects them unevenly. The most exposed tasks involve reading and restructuring large volumes of text: summarizing depositions and medical records, first-pass privilege and relevance review, drafting routine correspondence and filling standard forms. E-discovery has used machine learning for years through technology-assisted review, and generative AI now extends automation to summarizing and drafting. Tasks built on relationships, judgment and coordination are less exposed. These include interviewing clients and witnesses, managing trial logistics, chasing records from providers, noticing what is missing from a file, and knowing how a particular judge or clerk's office works. Professional rules also shape the outcome. ABA Model Rule 5.3 requires lawyers to supervise nonlawyer assistance. ABA Formal Opinion 512 (2024) addressed lawyers' duties when using generative AI, including competence, confidentiality and verifying output. Someone has to check what the AI produced, keep client data inside approved tools and record what was reviewed. That work often falls to paralegals. The skills now in demand include evaluating AI tools and how they fail, writing precise instructions, checking output against source documents, managing matter data and e-discovery platforms, and understanding privacy and security obligations. Roles such as litigation support specialist, e-discovery analyst and legal operations analyst draw on this mix. A common misconception is that the question is all or nothing. The more realistic effect is that each matter may need fewer hours of routine work. That could slow hiring for entry-level roles made up mostly of those tasks, while paralegals who can run and check AI-assisted workflows become more valuable. The size of each effect will vary by practice area and firm size, and published labor projections are estimates, not certainties.

The Future of Will AI Replace Paralegals?

The paralegal role will likely keep moving from producing first drafts toward managing, checking and improving AI-assisted work. The path into the profession may change, because routine tasks were traditionally how new paralegals learned. Firms and training programs may need deliberate ways to teach judgment. Demand will depend on practice area, pressure from clients on fees and how quickly firms adopt these tools. Paralegals who document their checking, learn their firm's AI platforms and understand confidentiality rules will be better placed than those whose work is limited to tasks software can now draft.

Mise en œuvre dans le monde réel

A litigation paralegal who used to spend days summarizing depositions now checks AI-generated summaries against the transcripts and corrects testimony the AI got wrong.

An e-discovery paralegal runs technology-assisted review. Instead of reading every document, they design training sets and use sample reviews to check how many relevant documents the system found.

A personal injury paralegal checks AI-built medical chronologies and flags missing records to request from providers.

A corporate paralegal becomes the firm's point person for a contract-management AI, testing how well it extracts clauses and training colleagues to use it.

AI is unlikely to replace paralegals as a profession in the near term, but it is automating many of their routine tasks, such as first-pass document review, summarizing and form filling. Demand is shifting toward paralegals who can oversee AI tools, verify their output, manage case data and handle the judgment-heavy work software does poorly.

Which paralegal task does the guide describe as less exposed to AI automation?

Tasks that depend on relationships and judgment, such as interviewing people, are less exposed than high-volume text processing.

Which ABA provision does the guide cite as requiring lawyers to supervise nonlawyer assistance?

Model Rule 5.3 covers lawyers' responsibilities for nonlawyer assistance, which is why someone must oversee AI-assisted work.

In AI-assisted document review, what does recall measure?

Recall measures how completely the process found the relevant documents. Precision measures how accurate its flags are.

Where does the guide say AI summaries most often go wrong?

Details such as a denial, a figure, a date or who said something are easy for a model to garble and can change the meaning.

How does the guide suggest checking recall in machine-learning document review?

Relevant documents the model missed can only be found among the documents it set aside, so you sample those.
