Aperçu

It matters because it became China's most-used AI chatbot, with 345 million monthly active users in March 2026 according to QuestMobile data reported by Caixin, and because ByteDance's low API prices helped set off China's 2024 AI price war.

  2. QuestMobile data reported by Caixin ranked Doubao as China's most-used AI app with 345 million monthly active users in March 2026.
  3. In May 2024 Volcano Engine priced Doubao Pro at about 0.0008 yuan per 1,000 tokens, prompting rapid price cuts from Alibaba and Baidu.
  4. Doubao-Seed-2.0 launched on 14 February 2026 in Pro, Lite and Mini variants aimed at reasoning and agent tasks.
  5. Benchmark comparisons between Doubao models and Western rivals are company-reported and not independently verified in the cited sources.

Plongée profonde

Doubao, which translates roughly as 'bean bun', is two things at once. It is a consumer AI assistant app, similar in role to ChatGPT, and it is the brand for ByteDance's family of foundation models, the large neural networks that generate text, images, video and speech. The models are built by ByteDance's Seed research team and sold to businesses through Volcano Engine, ByteDance's cloud computing arm, which also runs an international platform called BytePlus. The app, the models and the cloud share one name, which can make news coverage confusing: 'Doubao 2.0' may refer to an app update, a model release, or both.

The origin is modest. According to Caixin's May 2024 report, the model was first called Yunque, known in English as Skylark, and was among the first AI models in China to receive algorithm registration with regulators in 2023. China requires generative AI services offered to the public to complete such filings. The consumer app reached more than 100 million downloads and over 26 million monthly active users by May 2024, figures ByteDance's vice president of product and strategy Zhu Jun gave at the time.

The turning point for the business side came on 15 May 2024, when Volcano Engine launched the Doubao model family in Beijing. Caixin reported nine models, including Doubao Pro with a context window of up to 128,000 tokens (tokens are the word fragments models process) and a cheaper Doubao Lite, plus models for speech recognition and image generation. Volcano Engine president Tan Dai priced Doubao Pro at about 0.0008 yuan per 1,000 tokens, which he described as 99.8 percent cheaper than OpenAI's GPT-4. Fortune reported that within a week Alibaba cut some Qwen model prices by up to 97 percent, Baidu made its Ernie Speed and Ernie Lite models free for business users, and iFlytek announced its own low prices, a sequence widely called China's LLM price war.

The model line has moved quickly since then. On 14 February 2026, ByteDance released Doubao-Seed-2.0, which TechNode reports was positioned against OpenAI's GPT-5.2 and Google's Gemini 3 Pro for long-chain reasoning and agent tasks, with token pricing about an order of magnitude below comparable models, by ByteDance's account. The official Seed 2.0 model page describes three general-purpose variants: Pro for complex reasoning, Lite as the first omni-modal model in the Seed foundation series that understands video, images, audio and text together, and Mini for high-throughput serving. It lists vendor-reported scores for the Pro model such as 88.9 percent on GPQA Diamond, a graduate-level science quiz, and 46.9 percent on SWE-Bench Pro, a software engineering test. On 23 June 2026, at the Volcano Engine FORCE conference, ByteDance introduced Seed 2.1 in Pro and Turbo versions, with Turbo priced at half of Pro.

Scale is Doubao's defining feature. QuestMobile data reported by Caixin put Doubao at 155 million weekly active users in early December 2025 and 345 million monthly active users in March 2026, the most of any AI app in China, ahead of Alibaba's Qwen, DeepSeek and Tencent's Yuanbao. Qwen added more new users than Doubao in the first quarter of 2026, 126 million against about 100 million, so the race is tight. On the business side, Dataconomy reports that daily token calls across the Doubao model family exceeded 180 trillion by June 2026, more than ten times the level a year earlier, and that IDC credits Volcano Engine with 49.5 percent of China's public cloud model-as-a-service market. These usage figures come from ByteDance, Volcano Engine or third-party trackers rather than audited disclosures.

Compared with Western assistants such as ChatGPT or Gemini, Doubao is focused on the Chinese market and Chinese-language users, and it benefits from ByteDance's distribution through apps like Douyin. Compared with domestic rivals, its strategy has combined aggressive API pricing with consumer reach. DeepSeek drew global attention with openly released models, while Doubao's flagship models are proprietary and offered through apps and paid APIs.

There are clear limits and open questions. Benchmark comparisons with GPT, Gemini or Claude models are ByteDance's own claims and have not been independently replicated in the sources cited here. Caixin notes that no domestic Chinese chatbot has yet sustained revenue from consumer subscriptions alone; Baidu's Ernie Bot tried paid tiers before becoming fully free in April 2025, so Doubao's paid plans are a test. As a service operating in China, Doubao is subject to Chinese content regulation, which shapes what it will discuss. Its smartphone ambitions depend on cooperation from other app makers, which TechNode reports had only been partly secured.

For users, the core app is free, with the paid tiers aimed at heavier professional tasks. For developers, costs are metered per million tokens on Volcano Engine, with cheaper tiers for high-volume work and discounts for cached input; Seed 2.1 Pro cache hits were listed as low as 1.2 yuan per million tokens.

Estimating the API cost of a Doubao-powered support bot

  1. Estimate traffic: for example, 10,000 customer conversations a day, each using about 2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens.

  2. Multiply to get daily volume: 20 million input tokens and 5 million output tokens.

  3. Apply the June 2026 Seed 2.1 Pro list prices of 6 yuan per million input tokens and 30 yuan per million output tokens: 120 yuan plus 150 yuan, or 270 yuan per day.

  4. Recalculate for the Turbo variant, reported at half the Pro price, giving about 135 yuan per day.

  5. If most conversations share a long system prompt, estimate the share of input tokens that would be cache hits and reprice them at the lower cache rate.

  6. Check the current Volcano Engine or BytePlus price list before committing, since list prices change often.

Ce que ça montre

The learner ends with a daily and monthly cost estimate, roughly 8,100 yuan a month for Pro at these volumes, and a sense of how model tier and caching change it. Verifying against the live price list confirms whether the estimate still holds.

Mise en œuvre dans le monde réel

Consumers in China use the free Doubao app for chat, writing, search and image tasks; in May 2026 ByteDance listed paid tiers at 68, 200 and 500 yuan per month for heavier work such as presentations and data analysis.

Developers call Doubao models through ByteDance's Volcano Engine cloud; in June 2026 the Seed 2.1 Pro model was priced at 6 yuan per million input tokens and 30 yuan per million output tokens.

During the 2026 Lunar New Year Spring Festival Gala, Doubao handled 1.9 billion AI interactions, according to a headline cited by Caixin.

ByteDance supplies Doubao's AI to a smartphone built with ZTE's Nubia brand, and a second-generation handset was reported for the second quarter of 2026 with partial access to ride-hailing, food delivery and ticketing apps.

Businesses use the Volcano Ark model service, which Dataconomy reports had more than 1.1 million enterprise and individual developer users by June 2026, to build agents and content tools on Doubao models.

L’avenir de ByteDance Doubao

ByteDance's own announcements point toward agents. Seed 2.0 (February 2026) and Seed 2.1 (June 2026) were both framed around multi-step task execution, coding and computer use, and Volcano Engine launched developer tooling for deploying agents at the June 2026 conference. Monetization is the main open question: the paid tiers listed in May 2026 test whether Chinese consumers will pay for an assistant when rivals such as Ernie Bot went fully free in 2025. Hardware is another thread, with a second-generation Doubao phone built with ZTE's Nubia reported for 2026, though its success depends on access to third-party apps. Competition remains intense, with Alibaba's Qwen gaining users quickly in early 2026. Independent evaluation of ByteDance's benchmark claims, international availability through BytePlus, and the effect of export controls on access to advanced AI chips are all factors that observers continue to watch, and none of their outcomes is settled.
