What does “Latent Space” mean?

Definition

A compressed representational space where similar concepts are positioned near each other as vectors.

How Latent Space works

Example

An image model compresses each picture into a short list of numbers. Pictures with similar content end up with similar lists, so moving smoothly between two points can blend one image into another.

Why it matters

Working in a compressed space makes generation and comparison efficient. It is also why generators can interpolate between concepts.

Common questions

Why 'latent'?

The values are hidden or learned internally rather than directly observed.

Can people interpret the dimensions?

Rarely. Individual dimensions usually do not map to clear human concepts.

Where is it used?

Image diffusion models, autoencoders, embeddings, and recommendation systems.
